FESTIVAL revellers are in for a blast as Laneway has confirmed its Melbourne leg will be shimmying upriver to its new location at Footscray Park in 2019.
The relocation is mainly due to the mass construction blitz as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project.
St Jerome’s Laneway Festival was originally an “oversized block party” at a Lonsdale St alleyway about 15 years ago, before moving to its current location of nine years at the Footscray Community Arts Centre.

The $6.7 million tunnel project has forced the music festival to abandon its home as the ramps, set to connect the new West Gate Tunnel toll road to the Port of Melbourne, would hover over the site of the main stage.
Rumours of the move had been circulating since March, when the idea was raised in a Maribyrnong Council meeting.
Festival founders Danny Rogers and Jerome Borazio said they had been working “tirelessly” during the past three years with the council to secure the new site.
“It was important for us to stay in Footscray and we’re excited to unleash the full potential of this beautiful park,” they said in a statement.
“We’re so proud to be able to continue building on our reputation for utilising some of the most unique and interesting sites around the country — just wait til you see Footscray Park in full flight.”
Mayor Cuc Lam gave the move a thumbs up.
“Maribyrnong has an enviable reputation as a destination for world-class festivals, and we look forward to welcoming Laneway Festival to its new home at Footscray Park,” she said.
The new venue boasts a green atmosphere, as the heritage-listed site features bountiful garden beds, ponds, trees for shade and city views. More than 15,000 people have attended the festival during the past few years.
The 2018 festival had the largest line-up, with more than 70 artists performing at the event.
All dates, venues and the full-line up for the festival will be revealed soon.
