A Kensington predator jailed for sexually abusing a child smirked as his victim impact statements were read to the court.

Shaun Naidoo was jailed in Melbourne Magistrate’s Court earlier this month after he pleaded guilty to two charges of sexually touching a child under 16 and one charge of soliciting a child under 16 in 2018.

Representing himself, Naidoo smirked as victim impact statements from the victim and her mother were read to the court detailing their trauma.

The court heard his victim now feared physical contact with others and had become withdrawn.

The victim said she had trouble sleeping and her concentration was affected at school.

She also attended weekly therapy and counselling, which she believed had made people look at her differently.

A victim impact statement from the victim’s mother accused was scathing of Naidoo.

Magistrate Duncan Reynolds said he was not considering a corrections order.

“The only appropriate sentence is one of imprisonment,” he said.

Naidoo asked whether any of the time he had spent in immigration detention would be counted as pre-sentence detention.

Mr Reynolds said that it would not be but it could be taken into account.

Mr Reynolds also said Naidoo would become a registered sex offender for life.

Despite Naidoo requesting the sentence be adjourned so his risk of reoffending could be assessed by a psychologist, Mr Reynolds refused.

He said Naidoo had already caused significant delays to his case having changed his guilty plea from not guilty to guilty to not guilty during the course of 2019.

“Your offending constituted a serious breach … there has to be some just punishment,” he said.

Naidoo was jailed for six months.
