Maribyrnong Mayor Martin Zakharov said the decision was based on results from traffic management studies and feedback from residents of feeling unsafe to walk or cycle in their streets due to cars travelling at high speeds.
“We want all members of our community to feel safe when using our roads and by lowering the speed limit it will reduce the risk of injury or fatality and encourage more people to walk to ride,” he said.
Cr Zakharov said it was hoped the move would encourage residents to use more sustainable methods of transport, such as walking or cycling.
Maribyrnong is forecasting a population growth of 80 per cent during the next 25 years, from 86,975 in 2016 to 156,291 in 2041 and the council plans to place more emphasis on sustainable transport to ease pressure on the roads.
