REMOVAL of a dangerous level crossing in Campbellfield will begin later this year and should be finished in 2019.
The Level Crossing Removal Authority will lower the rail line under Camp Rd, which carries 20,000 vehicles a day.
Broadmeadows state Labor MP Frank McGuire said the rail-under-road proposal was preferred as other options would have required major re-routing of Camp Rd, a significant realignment of Sydney Rd and major alterations to the Western Ring Rd.

He said the Camp Rd level crossing was one of Melbourne’s worst, with three accidents and 15 near misses in the past decade.
“Getting rid of it will reduce congestion, improve safety and create hundreds of jobs in Campbellfield, which will have flow-on benefits for local businesses,” he said.
The authority will hold public information sessions on the works at The Meadows, 80 Northcorp Blvd, Broadmeadows on February 6, 6-8pm, and February 11, 10am-noon.
