A new pool, water play area and extra multipurpose courts have been revealed as part of an upgrade to the Kensington Community Recreation Centre.

The City of Melbourne released a new concept for the centre based off community feedback, with construction due to start in February 2021.

The council wants the site to become greener, with a sustainable design that includes more flexible spaces, a larger gym, a cafe and better integration with JJ Holland Park.

Melbourne Councillor Beverley Pinder said the proposed development would improve access for many in the community.

“New, modern, accessible and family-friendly change facilities in the pool and water play area will make it more comfortable for everyone to use the centre,” she said.

“These concepts showcase the community’s ideas and vision for a state-of-the-art centre that remains affordable, accessible, and relevant to our community.”

Plans for the centre upgrade could include extra multipurpose courts.

Cr Pinder said that the upgrade aimed to include a number of environmentally friendly measures to tackle climate change.

“The concepts also include sustainability features such as solar panels, a new green wall, water conservation measures, efficient heating and cooling systems, and double glazing,” she said.

City of Melbourne media adviser Katie Hyder said the works would include a temporary closure of the centre but did not say how long that would be.

“We are currently exploring a range of relocation options to support members and users to continue their activities and social connections during the temporary closure,” she said.

The YMCA, who manage the centre, declined to comment on how the planned works would affect staff, customers and community groups.

To date, the council has spent $1.2 million on planning and design works for the new centre.

The council is seeking feedback on the proposed vision plan by October 4.
