Moreland Council bans meat from its events on Monday’s

A Greens-led inner Melbourne council has dropped meat from all its catering for one day a week — despite one councillor calling it the “most ridiculous” thing he has voted on. Here’s why it’s taken the stand.

Meat is off the menu at Moreland Council after it voted to stop serving animals at events on Mondays.

The council last night ticked off on its catering contracts, with a last-minute provision adding the ban.

Meat dishes will be banned from all council from any events held on Monday’s, including meals during councillor briefings.

Greens councillor Dale Martin said it was a way the council could reduce greenhouse gases caused by the meat industry.

Other events to go meat free could include citizenship ceremonies, awards or community workshops.

Cr Martin said given the council had declared a climate emergency it needed to be a leader in limiting its impact on the environment.

“(The) council has very, very limited sphere of influence in the agricultural space,” he said.

“This is within our sphere and I think all of us will probably be a hell of a lot healthier.”

Councillors Natalie Abboud, Mark Riley, Jess Dorney and Sue Bolton supported Cr Martin’s amendment.

Opposing councillor Oscar Yildiz said the idea could be the “most ridiculous” thing he has voted on in his time with the council.

“We look forward to joining our fellow councillors and have a good meal but to actually say to our caterers, you cannot serve meat on that day, I find that interesting,” he said.

Cr Yildiz was joined by John Kavanagh, Ali Irfanli and Lambros Tapinos in voting against the plan.

Earlier in the day, state Victorian Animal Justice Party MP and vegan Andy Meddick called for state parliament to ban meat on Mondays to set an example on climate science.
