Summer parklets are popping up and creating a buzz around Moonee Valley as cafes and restaurants get back on their feet following lockdown.
The parklets are carparking spaces temporarily transformed into places to eat, meet and relax in an outdoor setting full of greenery.
With restrictions impeding indoor dining, cafes and restaurants can use them to extend their outdoor dining options for up to five months.
“When expressions of interest were called for there was strong interest in the summer parklets program,” Moonee Valley Council chief executive Helen Sui said.
“This is a way we can help local businesses welcome patrons to outdoor spaces while maintaining a safe, socially-distanced environment.
Ms Sui said the aim was to encourage people to stay longer in retail and hospitality precincts, build social connections and provide an boost to business by supporting a thriving street life.
“Council will evaluate the impact of the program, which will produce valuable data to inform future decisions about initiatives like this,” she said.
The first parklet was installed in Puckle St in Moonee Ponds after a joint application from Sir Duke and Sweet Latinas owners.
“People are gravitating to the new parklet,” Sir Duke manager Ashley Elia said.
“Being out in our city’s street life with something to eat and drink is one of the most enjoyable things you can do.
“We’re proud to be part of the summer parklets program and to help activate Puckle St, one of Melbourne’s greatest shopping strips.
“It is really going to energise the area, having people enjoying the space. We’re very excited.”
Moonee Valley Council is working to help businesses through its hardship policy, laneway activations, footpath trading and Wi-Fi installation.
