Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in custody following a collision in Craigieburn.

Officers responded to reports of a car colliding with two other vehicles at the intersection of Craigieburn Rd and Waterview Bld about 6.10am on Friday.

It’s understood the male driver, who is yet to be formally identified, ran from the scene and was later caught by a member of the public before police took him into custody.

However, the man became unresponsive during the incident and was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said detectives were investigating, with oversight by professional standards command which is standard practice when a person dies while in police custody.

Craigieburn Rd in Craigieburn remains closed in both directions between Aitken and Waterview boulevards into Friday afternoon.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics and Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedics attended the scene.

“One person was transported by road to Royal Melbourne Hospital,” she said.

Motorist are urged to avoid the congestion in the area by using Donnybrook Rd to the north or Somerton Rd to the south.

Local buses on Route 528 are diverting around the road closure, missing two stops in each direction.

A Department of Transport spokesman said motorists should be mindful of residential traffic when using detours near the closure.

“This closure is under the control of Victoria Police and the road will re-open only when investigations are complete and it’s safe to do so,” he said.

“Our signals team is monitoring conditions in the area and will adjust traffic lights to minimise congestion on surrounding roads”.
