THE fight for a community hub in Glenroy has scored a major victory, after the Labor Party confirmed it would commit funds should it win the next federal election.

Wills federal Labor MP Peter Khalil first raised the need for a community centre in parliament in 2016 and recently confirmed his commitment to the cause by pledging $6 million dollars to the Wheatsheaf Community Hub, should his party be elected.

“I am proud to say that commitment will continue as we approach the next election.” Mr Khalil said.

“The northern suburbs in my electorate of Wills, including Glenroy, have been ignored for far too long and I have been working hard on ways to address this.”

GOVERNMENTS URGED TO GIVE GLENROY A GO

Moreland Council is asking for a $6 million pledge from state and federal governments as part of the Give Glenroy a Go campaign.

The campaign is supported by Leader News.

The $24.5 million hub, would feature a new library, health and child care among other services.

The council will foot the remaining $12.5 million to complete the project.

The federal Liberal Party did not respond to multiple calls on whether it would back the hub.

Moreland Mayor John Kavanagh said he was “delighted” by Labor’s support and urged residents to continue to lobby their local members.

“Over a long period of time Glenroy has experienced under investment from state and federal governments,” Cr Kavanagh said.

“The council can’t afford to fully fund a project of this size by itself and nor should it have to. We need help.”
