Plant lovers and flower fanatics can feast their eyes on the best gardens in Kensington as part of an annual garden festival.

The Kensington Garden Festival is on October 26 and 27 and will feature marvellous gardens from across the suburb, a scarecrow contest and plenty of plant, food and drink stalls.

Festival goers can take part in a self-guided walking tour of around 20 key gardening hot spots.

Kensington Garden Festival founder Nick Pettitt, 54, who has entered his own garden, said he was inspired to start the festival after seeing pictures of the Chelsea Flower Show in London on social media.

“Each year all the businesses around Chelsea decorate their shop fronts and I got to thinking it would be great if we could do that in Kensington,” he said.

Mr Pettitt said some of the sights would include community gardens, a food forest, interesting street plantings and a public composting scheme.

His pick of the crop was a beautiful new addition to the festival on Robertson St.

“What’s good about it is its gardening design,” he said.

“It’s a great example of playing with texture and lines, it shows what you can do with a small garden to make it a dynamic place.”

He said he loved gardens that expressed peoples personalities.

“My garden is a mess and expresses my inability to say no to buying a plant,” he said.

The avid gardener said he had been gardening since he was six years old.

“We weren’t allowed to have pets when I was a kid, but we were allowed to have a plant,” he said.

The festival is a free event for all passionate gardeners, and those that would like to enter their own garden can contact kensingtongardenfestival@gmail.com.
