A drug-trafficking Bacchus Marsh concreter caught with drugs and weapons needed two points of meth each day to stay awake at work, a court has heard.

Jay May pleaded guilty at the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on January 28 to drug possession and weapons charges.

May was arrested at his Bacchus Marsh home on December 12 last year after police seized meth, a bag of speed, a slingshot and a sword.

Police raided the concreter’s home after they received “intelligence” he was dealing drugs, the court heard.

May admitted to police he was a drug addict but didn’t remember “the speed” was at his home.

He said he needed “two points” of meth each day to “stay awake” at work.

May told police he bought the sword off eBay for $60 because he “liked it” but didn’t know he needed a licence to keep it.

He claimed he didn't know who owned the slingshot.

May was last year jailed for 14 days and placed on a community corrections order after he was found guilty of drug-trafficking, the court heard.

However, May successfully appealed that sentence at the County Court last November.

He was resentenced to only perform community service.

May – who represented himself – claimed he was back in trouble with police because he had not received any help from “corrections or the court” since his arrest for drug trafficking.

Magistrate Gregory Robinson – who originally sentenced May last year – was less than impressed.

“Why would corrections give you any help,” Magistrate Robinson said.

May responded by telling the judge he was not required to do dug rehabilitation when resentenced in the County Court.

The court also heard May considered himself a “high-functioning” drug addict who had “no plans to stop”.

“It just seems odd a drug-trafficker comes to the County Court and isn’t given any rehabilitation,” Magistrate Robinson said.

“I think you should’ve gone to jail because you’re a drug trafficker.”

Magistrate Robinson said May would not be jailed this time but ordered he be assessed for a community corrections order.

May will be sentenced at a later date.
