Traders thanked officers and shook their hands as the operation was underway.
Some people tried to run as they watched the crowd of officers take over the northwest streets but they were quickly arrested.
Footscray Police acting senior sergeant Travis Costelow said anyone who brought drugs into the area for sale or use would be caught and held accountable.
“These operations also aren’t just about detection and apprehension of offenders, it’s also about reaching out to those in need and engaging them with support through our referral agencies,” he said.
“With so many police working an operation, we have the capacity to engage with vulnerable members of our community and provide them with the assistance and support they need.”
Sen Sgt Costelow said he usually saw a significant drop in crime in the area following street operations.
“The community love seeing large numbers of police walking through the Footscray precinct, the reception we get from the public I know is something that the police members really enjoy,” he said.
