A driver is fighting for his life after veering onto the wrong side of the road and smashing into a tree northwest of Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a serious single-vehicle crash with two patients, a man and woman, at Bacchus Marsh about 11am Tuesday.

Police believe the man entered the wrong side of the road at the intersection of Clarinda St and Main St before hitting the tree.

Paramedics, including ALS (Advanced Life Support) and MICA (Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance) crews, remained at the scene as of 1pm and an air ambulance was also dispatched.

The female passenger was driven by paramedics to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with upper and lower body injuries.

The man in his 70s was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.
A Bacchus Marsh SES spokesman said crews were assisting and urged motorists to avoid the area.

Road closures were still in place as of 2pm.

The exact circumstances of the crash are yet to be determined.
