Even a rusty nail through the wrist can’t stop piano master Damon Smith from tinkling the keys.
The Coburg North comedian had just finished writing his new show Crazy Armswhen he went to fetch a pet cat from under his house and was stabbed by the nail.
The comedic show runs through the entire history of the piano and Smith recovered in time to debut it in Perth earlier this year.
“The doctors couldn’t believe that the infection was so bad but also that it missed the arteries and nerves and everything,” he said.
“I feel extremely lucky and blessed I could still use my hands, my left hand is tired a lot more now.”
Smith said he had to learn an array of new styles and skills on the piano for the show, which includes classical music, rag tag and even Elton John.

The pianist said he returns to the instrument because of its adaptability.
“When I moved to Melbourne for music 15 years ago, I played guitar in an alt-rock band,” he said.
“I’ve gone back to the piano time and time again because it’s an instrument I compose on and it’s amazing.”
Crazy Armsis showing from June 27 to 29 at Chapel off Chapel.
