A cafe and nursery has found the right balance thanks to a partnership between a musician, a horticulturalist and a coffee roaster.
Selvatica roasts a range of coffee beans on site in its Coburg North home, while selling hot food and featuring a range of indoor plants. An in-store viewing window allows shoppers to see the beans being roasted in real time.
Owner and Latin percussionist Seb Orellana said he and his plant-loving wife and roaster brother planned the business for three years before opening.
“We’ve been working for years to do a mixed business and be accountable to the environment,” he said.
“It was always the idea to have it full of plants and make them into decorations but, of course, almost every plant here is for sale.”

Selvatica sells roasted Ethiopian, Honduran, Guatemalan and Brazilian beans by the packet alongside the plants.
“We’re all about coffee and plants, it’s pretty simple,” Mr Orellana said.
Selvatica can be found at 54 Gaffney St, Coburg North. It is open Monday to Saturday.
