ETHOS Urban has been appointed to develop a masterplan for the Kyneton Primary School site.

The project consultants will look at potential uses for the 161-year site, following extensive consultation with the community.

Macedon Ranges Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the plan would allow the State Government, which along with the council is contributing $65,000 to the project, to make an informed decision on the site’s future.

“There is a great potential here to cater for any number of community activities and this process provides an opportunity to take a close look at the many ideas out there about possible ways to use this historic site,” she said.

Macedon Ranges Autism Network president Fiona Le Nepveu said there was no reason why multiple tenants could’t fill the site.

“We have some amazing services (in the Macedon Ranges), both private and public, and for us to work together would be pretty awesome,” she said.

“It’s important all the services have an area, a one-stop shop — they could have all the services in one place which would be pretty handy”.

With 390 families, and growing, in her network and no permanent facilities, part of the site could fulfil the needs of the group.

“We meet in coffee shops, we have a brick club, where the kids get to play with Lego, down at the tennis club — we would love to have a presence, a place we could have specialised care, training for teachers and families,” she said.

“We obviously have some interest in the building as a network”.

Lisa Rundell of Rundell & Rundell would like to see the site set up for local artisans of rare arts and lost trades.

“There is definitely a demand for it — we need to take advantage of people wanting to learn,” she said.

Community consultation will start in the coming weeks.
