Community forum to address proposed waste incinerator in Craigieburn

As Hume Council considers plans for a waste-to-energy incinerator in Craigieburn, neighbours are preparing to fight it at a community forum, saying “it’s way too close to the community”.

The proposed waste incinerator could take up to 500,000 tonnes of waste and turn it into energy.

Craigieburn residents are furiously protesting against a proposed waste to energy incinerator.

A community information forum will be held to provide information and a platform to voice concerns against the plant, which could take up to 500,000 tonnes of waste and turn it into energy each year.

No Toxic Incinerator for Hume president Ann Williams said the proposed incinerator was concerning.

“We’re very concerned about the hazardous waste it produces, who wants to live near that?” Ms Williams said.

The proposed site, at 65 Amaroo Rd, is on land of Aboriginal cultural heritage.

The application from Enrgx Ptd Ltd for a waste-to-energy facility at 65 Amaroo Cr, Craigieburn was received by Hume Council on September 6.

Waste-to-energy plants processes landfill and rubbish that cannot otherwise be recycled to generate electricity.

Items include timbers, textiles and furniture.

Hume recycling has been sent to landfill since the SKM closure.

Hume planning and development director Michael Sharp said the planning permit application was being assessed.

A mandatory Aboriginal cultural heritage management plan has begun along with an application to the Environmental Protection Agency for works approval.

“As part of this EPA process, community and stakeholder consultation is requires and it is at this time that the community can raise any concerns,” Mr Sharp said.

The community forum is on March 28 at the Hume Global Learning Centre.

It will include speakers from Zero Waste Australia along with an environmental chemist.
