Brunswick group inspires thousands to ‘put your bins out in your ball gown’

Thousands of people across the globe are vacuuming, putting their bins out and other household chores in their fanciest frocks as part of a fun new movement combating isolation. And it was all started by this Brunswick woman.

Melburnians stuck inside during self isolation aren’t letting it stop them from getting dressed up to the nines.

A new Facebook page, called Put your bins out in your ball gown, has been encouraging people to get out of their pyjamas and into their best dresses to do regular household chores.

Group members are putting on their best dress and heels to do the daily chores.

Group co-founder Victoria Rogers, from Brunswick, said she was inspired to start the page with her friends Angie Emrys-Jones and Alison Davey after Angie wasn’t able to wear a fancy dress to an event cancelled over COVID-19.

“She posted a picture in her dress with a sad face saying she can’t go, and I said when we go into lockdown I plan on wearing everything in my entire wardrobe,” she said.

“I said we should start a movement and she actually said yes, we initially shared it with our friends and then it kept growing and growing.”

The group now has more than 9000 members in eight days, with about one and a half thousand waiting to join.

“It grew beyond what we ever anticipated,” Ms Rogers said.

She said she thought the group had been so successful because it was just what people needed in these troubling times.

“We’ve managed to hit the button that everyone wanted, something silly they could do in their own home that was cheerful, happy and positive and gave them a reason to get out of their pyjamas in the morning and put on a bit of lipstick,” Ms Rogers said.

Even men have been jumping on the bandwagon.

Little kids to 94-year-olds have been taking part and posting pictures in their finest outfits, with even men getting on board to don a frock.

“We’ve had quite a few men wearing their wives frocks and putting the bins out and bless, they’re kind of squeezing themselves in places and it really makes everyone have a chuckle,” Ms Rogers said.

Some have even managed to fit into their wedding dresses years later.

“It’s lovely to see people put on these things and remember when they wore it and relive happy memories,” she said.

The group is now so big it has gone international, with members from England, America, New Zealand and Canada.

Several fun events will be held in the near future to keep members on their toes, including a regular Tuesday Shoes Day, an early Halloween and a Christmas in July – if the lockdown continues until then.
