An alleged crook has somehow escaped serious injury after the car he was trying to set alight with a cigarette lighter exploded in his face.

Stunning vision of the incident shows a man pull the 2016 Toyota 86 model up in a Brunswick East street before getting out while smoking a cigarette.

The driver of the vehicle, who is joined by another man, leans back inside the car and appears to pour accelerant inside.

He throws the cigarette inside the allegedly stolen Toyota but it doesn’t ignite.

He then walks around to the passenger side of the vehicle where he is joined by the second man.

He tries again to set the car on fire with what appears to be a lighter and while he is leaning inside the front passenger door the vehicle explodes.

The vision shows the men bolt from the scene to avoid the fire.

Moreland crime investigation unit detectives said the car was allegedly stolen from Lalor on August 4 between 10am and 8.45pm.

They said the car was driven to Little Miller Street, a dead-end road which opens up to Balfe Park, and set alight about 9.10pm.

The pair then fled through Balfe Park and are believed to have driven off in another vehicle.

Police believe one of the men was injured in the fire.

The driver of the allegedly stolen car is described as having a thin to medium build, aged possibly early to mid-20s, has short dark hair and a short beard.

He was wearing a cap, down jacket which was possibly blue in colour, skinny leg tracksuit pants and sneakers.

The other man is described as of medium build, aged in his mid-20s and was wearing a waterproof style jacked, a cap, long pants, sneakers and had the hood of the jacket up over his head.
