Barkly St in Footscray is a bottleneck hotspot for drivers in Victoria

THE gridlock faced by motorists on Barkly St in Footscray is among the worst in Melbourne, new RACV data shows.

THE congestion faced by motorists on Barkly St in Footscray is among the worst in Melbourne, new RACV data shows.

RACV used state-of-the-art technology to identify the 10 most traffic-jammed roads in Melbourne.

Victorian vehicles were fitted with sensors which captured real-time data of traffic woes across a three-month period.

The Barkly St stretch between Donald and Droop streets, which runs through the bustling Footscray shopping precinct, was identified as a bottleneck hotspot, where road traffic, cyclists, pedestrians and parking all share the same space.

MELBOURNE’S PEAK ‘HOUR’ PAIN GROWS TO SIX HOURS

Data showed the average speeds detected were 37km/h at off-peak times and a low of just 14km/h during peak times.

Resident Nick Cowling, who lives on Barkly St, claimed the traffic moved at a snail’s pace almost all the time.

“The traffic is pretty full on, whether it’s day or night,” Mr Cowling said.

“There are cars everywhere — you’re never doing the speed limit on Barkly St.”

Residents raised concerns congestion would worsen when a six-tower mega-complex was built on Hopkins St within Footscray’s Joseph Rd precinct. It’s estimated the $600 million residential, retail and office tower — which will feature more than 900 dwellings — will bring an extra 1000 cars to the area.

Local cyclist Tobias Jones believed the slowness of Barkly St provided safety.

“The strip is busy with shops on either side of the street, so it’s probably better the traffic is slow,” he said.

RACV roads and traffic manager Dave Jones said the road became clogged due to the vast number of commuters competing for limited road space.
