After leading a team through months of isolation – and darkness – on an expedition in Antarctica, Rachael Robertson has put together advice for surviving COVID-19 restrictions.
The expedition leader and author said while ongoing isolation measures differed from months or Antarctic darkness, the same challenges applied.
“While the environment was tough – minus 35C and blizzards, the interpersonal pressure was much harder, as we experienced compounding anxiety, boredom and a lack of privacy,” she said.
“Our current situation is similar – as we’re staying inside, isolated from families, friends and our normal routine.”
She said everything could become a bigger issue when stuck inside together – like when the $20 million science program nearly came to a halt over arguments over how to cook bacon to perfection.
To help families keep the peace, she has prepared six golden rules to survive extended time together.
RACHAEL’S ISOLATION TIPS:
1. Choose your words wisely: Rather than say the first thing that comes to mind, pick your words carefully. Express issues as “concerns” rather than being “worried”.
2. Stay calm: Keep body language calm and stay poised. Be conscious of your tone of voice and keep it at a level that conveys decisiveness.
3. Communication is key: Keep regular communication with friends and family.
4. Early intervention: Deal with issues that arise quickly, don’t let them fester. Speak to others directly, don’t let the rumour mill begin.
5. Respect: Have respect for your home and workplace, especially if they overlap. Understand that when sharing a space, keeping things clean is not only beneficial for yourself, but your fellow housemates.
6. Lead by example: With increased restrictions put in place to manage COVID-19, agree with your household on rules to stick to. Lead by example in your house – instilling confidence at home.
