CLIVE Palmer was forced to cancel a planned trip to Williamstown today when fierce Queensland storms blew the roof off his Gold Coast home.
Palmer United Party Western Metropolitan upper house candidate Trevor Dance said Mr Palmer had planned to visit his childhood home in Perry St today.
He was to make a comment about the need to protect Williamstown’s heritage buildings, Mr Dance, who lives in Sunbury, said.
“He was really looking forward to seeing the house. He’s really disappointed himself,’’ Mr Dance said.
“It’s got a lot of history that home. That whole area really needs to be looked after in terms of heritage.
“We’ve got to look after our heritage. I was quite disappointed with what has happened down there with so many buildings left to go to ruin just to be demolished.”
Save Williamstown spokesman Godfrey Moase had hoped Mr Palmer would have something to say about the controversial Port Phillip Woollen Mills residential development, including the planned demolition of the Oriental Hotel.
Mr Dance said he recently attended a meeting of the Save Williamstown group and was aware of their concerns.
“If we are lucky enough to get in, I am going to look into that,’’ he said.
Save Williamstown will meet tonight from 6pm at the Pirates Tavern, Seaworks, Nelson Place, Williamstown.
