Moonee Valley is one of only four metropolitan council areas to have a zero road death toll so far this year.

The TAC, as part of the Towards Zero campaign, has recorded zero bicyclist, driver, motorcyclist, passenger and pedestrian deaths in the municipality.

Bayside, Hobsons Bay and Port Phillip have also had zero road-related deaths.

TAC road safety lead director Samantha Cockfield said speed was a major factor in road trauma.

“In metropolitan areas, people travel at lower speeds over shorter distances, meaning the outcome of a crash is less likely to be fatal,” she said.

Ms Cockfield said although they generally saw fewer road deaths in high-density suburban areas, there was still need for concern.

“There are more pedestrians, bike riders and motorcycle riders, who are more vulnerable and at risk than people travelling in vehicles,” she said.

“No one should be killed or injured on our roads and this means that it’s crucial everyone is making safe decisions and looking out for all road users.”

Moonee Valley Mayor Narelle Sharpe said she was glad the community was taking care on the roads and credited the statistic to the council’s Transport Safety Strategy introduced in 2016.

“It’s played a key role in the reduction of fatal and serious injury crashes in our city, and in overall crashes,” Cr Sharpe said.

She said it was important Moonee Valley road users continued to exercise caution going into the festive season.

“(There will be) more vehicles on the roads, it is important that our residents remain vigilant and take all safety precautions such as not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and not speeding,” Cr Sharpe said.

Of the 218 people killed so far this year in Victoria, 96 have lost their lives on metropolitan roads.

The highest percentage of metropolitan deaths were drivers (28), closely followed by pedestrians (26).
