An “urgent Maccas run” was all it took for a newly-licensed P-plater to risk it all, clocking 150km/h on the Tullamarine Freeway.
The 18-year-old, from Gladstone Park, was pulled over by Fawkner Highway Patrol officers after they watched him leave McDonald’s at Melbourne Airport and enter the Tullamarine Freeway at 12.15am today.
The P-plater, who only had his licence for three months, was seen drifting across the three lanes of the freeway while driving 50km/h over the limit in the 100km/h zone, before exiting at Mickleham Rd.
Officers quickly pulled over the young man, who explained he was coming back from an urgent trip to McDonald’s.
Fawkner Highway Patrol Sergeant Dean Pickering said the Gladstone Park teen was a “classic high-risk driver”.
“Somebody who makes a deliberate choice to drive like this needs to realise it can be a fine line between what they think is a bit of fun and a serious collision,” he said.
Sgt Pickering said even though the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, it was still a busy time at the airport with many cars on the road.
“I am glad we are impounding his car and sending him to court, as opposed to knocking on his parents’ door and telling them there has been a bad crash,” Sgt Pickering said.

The teen had his car impounded and was charged with speeding, careless driving and intentional loss of traction.
He will appear before court at a later date.
