A Nepalese seasonal worker accused of storming his former Mildura rental property, allegedly made death threats alongside an accomplice armed with a knife, a court has heard.
Sulav Wagle, 27, fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court seeking bail on charges of home invasion.
The court heard Mr Wagle and a co-accused allegedly scaled the Colorbond fence of a San Mateo Ave address they had previously been evicted from and busted through an unlocked door.
Police alleged Mr Wagle’s co-accused was brandishing a knife while the duo was said to be using threatening language and making death threats toward the people inside the house.
Witnesses told police two people fled the address and that was when they called police.
The duo were arrested on the corner of Magnolia Ave and 9th St, allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
The court heard Mr Wagle allegedly told police he didn’t care if he got deported back to Nepal. It was also claimed he told police the witnesses had made everything up when a witness statement was read to him.
His lawyer Sasha Tuliakiono pointed out that no physical abuse was inflicted on the alleged victims and questioned why a Nepalese interpreter wasn’t present when Mr Wagle was interviewed by police.
Ms Tuliakiono also flagged delays that might see her client ultimately spend more time behind bars waiting for his matter to be heard than he would ultimately be sentenced to.
An address in Glenroy was put to the court as a potential bail address, but police opposed that, as some witnesses had fled to Melbourne following the alleged incident.
Magistrate Michael Coghlan pointed to Mr Wagle’s lack of ties to Australia and said he held concerns that he would fail to answer bail by potentially fleeing overseas.
“He is facing very serious charges … at this stage, I do not propose to grant him bail,” Mr Coghlan said.
Sulav Wagle is next slated to appear before the court for a committal mention on June 18.
