An unemployed Mildura father is accused of robbing a 10-year-old child and threatening a woman in separate drug-related incidents, a court has heard.
Narzzouli Togo, 30, fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court seeking bail on charges of robbery, and making threats to kill.
The court heard Mr Togo allegedly hit the child in the back and stole their backpack and iPhone as the child sat on the grandstand at the Mildura Harness Club.
Detective Senior Constable Sarah Dosen told the court the alleged robbery was concerning, particularly because the alleged victim was a child.
“I believe drugs are a big issue for Mr Togo,” Sen-Constable Dosen said. “To prey on a child who is only 10 years old is very concerning to me.”
In a separate incident, Mr Togo was accused of threatening to kill a woman who refused to let him into her Hornsey Park house to retrieve his drug stash.
Police allege he also destroyed statues outside her home while calling her a “fat s--t.”
Concerns were raised by both Sen-Constable Dosen and prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Lauren Abson about a Hornsey Park property as a potential bail address for Mr Togo.
Mr Togo’s lawyer Hugh Middleton said his client had admitted to struggling with an addiction to ice and had been frank about his issues during a pre-bail CISP (Court Integrated Services Program) assessment.
Magistrate Therese McCarthy acknowledged Mr Togo’s honesty but emphasised the seriousness of the allegations.
“The court is dealing with a robbery and assault on a 10-year-old,” Ms McCarthy said.
“The issue here is risk and I am not sure if conditions in their current form are going to address it without some kind of detoxification.”
Ms McCarthy adjourned Mr Togo’s matter part-heard so Mr Middleton could explore rehab options for his client.
Mr Togo will return to have his bail application completed on December 16.
