A Dareton mum broke down in tears as she realised how close she was to returning to jail after fronting court over a stack of shoplifting charges.
Monica Kelly, pleaded guilty in the Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Monday to multiple counts of shoplifting from various businesses.
Kelly, dressed in tracksuit pants, slides, and a red T-shirt, kept her head down as the prosecutor read the summary of her offending.
The court heard that on December 12 of last year, Kelly stole a variety of groceries and two four-packs of Red Bull from the Coles on Fifteenth St.
In a single week in January of this year, Kelly brazenly stole from nine different businesses across Mildura, including BWS, Cotton On, Kmart, United Petrol Station, Chemist Warehouse, Rebel Sport, Dan Murphy’s and Aldi.
When approached by workers at Rebel Sport who attempted to get her to return the stolen goods, she became aggressive and yelled, “all your clothes are for sl-ts”.
Magistrate Patrick Southey asked Kelly what she did with all the items she stole, to which Kelly replied, “I used to sell them to get a feed sometimes”.
“I have been keeping my nose clean since I got out of jail in February,” Kelly added, getting emotional as the prospect of jail time dawned on her.
Mr Southey called Kelly’s behaviour “disgraceful,” adding “her arrogance, she doesn’t give a hoot.”
He gave Kelly an unequivocal warning as he handed down his sentence.
“If you appear before me again, you are going to jail. I’m not trying to scare you. I mean it, I will lock you up.”
Kelly was released on an undertaking with conviction and is required to return to court on July 1, 2025.
