A Mildura man allegedly smashed a woman’s phone in a violent encounter before making threats on the lives of both her and her parents.
Anthony Mete, 25, faced Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Friday to apply for bail, having been charged with making threats to kill.
The court heard Mr Mete had allegedly grabbed the alleged victim’s phone before he threw it on the floor and stomped on it, smashing it in the process.
Police alleged this was followed by a slew of threats by Mr Mete toward the woman including “I’ll kill you, I’ll kill your mum too and burn your f**king house down.”
It was also alleged by police that he threatened to decapitate the woman after slitting her throat.
“I should kill you and cave your head in. I should slit your throat and take your head to the police station,” police claimed Mr Mete said.
Police prosecutor Jeri Fung sought to present a more serious matter involving the two parties, but it was not listed in time.
The court heard Mr Mete denied all allegations after he was arrested and instead claimed it was the woman who had done those things to him.
Mr Mete was supported by multiple people in the court, including several friends and his mother, from Western Australia, who was in town for a wedding.
His mum offered a surety and to take her son back to WA with her next week.
She also offered to try to get him into a rehab facility in Perth that was a five-minute drive from their property.
Police agreed to the bail, stating they would not oppose it if Mr Mete accompanied his mother to WA.
Magistrate Patrick Southey said it was a good idea that he was not going to be in Mildura.
“They are serious charges, but other than the risk of him not coming back it is a win-win,” Mr Southey said.
Mr Mete will be released on bail at 5am on Monday and will immediately board a flight to Melbourne en route to Perth.
Mr Mete said, “I love you mum” as he was led back to the cells by custody management officers.
He is next scheduled to appear before the court on April 4.
