A Mildura gun nut has been charged over a stockpile of weapons and ammunition after allegedly posting a picture of himself on social media wielding a rifle with the words “my new toy, pull up, bang bang bang”.

Guy Mitchell appeared in Mildura Magistrates’ Court on November 1 to apply for bail after police found a stolen rifle and other ammunition while being a prohibited person.

On September 9 Mildura cops were alerted by NSW police that Mitchell had allegedly posted a photo of himself on Facebook holding a rifle.

The caption read “my new toy, pull up, bang bang bang”.

This came after a separate report to Mildura police of a man in a dark Holden threatening to shoot someone.

The court heard police went to see Mitchell on September 10, where he admitted he knew he was a prohibited person.

In a search of his home, cops say they found a .22 calibre rifle in the master bedroom, one rifle with the bolt removed hidden under a single bed mattress, a rifle bolt in a separate location with a case of .22 ammunition in a lunch box, a 22 calibre round of ammunition in the roof cavity of Mitchell’s laundry and a 22 calibre WindFire rifle in his car — a dark Holden.

The WindFire rifle allegedly matched the gun in Mitchell’s Facebook photo and further investigations discovered the gun had been taken during a car theft in 2022.

In court on Wednesday, Mitchell appeared from the docks, having been in custody for 52 days.

Magistrate Patrick Southey granted his bail application in order for Mitchell to complete a 12-week program before a later court date.

“These are serious charges, but if you do well on the program and come back to court you’ll have a chance at getting time served,” he said.

“It is a great opportunity for you to do well.”

Mitchell will return to court on January 31.
