A two-week-old baby has been rushed from Mildura to hospital in Melbourne after she started “breathing heavy”.

Pixie Doecke was taken home in loving arms of her mother after being born happy and healthy.

But just a week later, the bub wouldn’t settle.

“She started breathing heavy, I didn’t think to much of it, she was still happy, still alert, still feeding, a normal baby just breathing a bit heavier,” mum Jenna Doecke said.

But when she wouldn’t settle and began vomiting, Ms Doecke decided it was time to go to the Mildura Base Hospital.

Within hours, preparations were made and mum and bub were flown to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne, where doctors told Ms Doecke her baby’s blood had become acidic and an X-ray confirmed her heart was enlarged.

Just four days after she started getting sick, Pixie was diagnosed with myocarditis, rhinovirus and enterovirus.

She was intubated and put on morpheine but her heartrate skyrocketed and Ms Doecke was warned Pixie could have heart failure.

“Thursday she stayed stable, she wasn’t getting better, but she wasn’t getting worse,” Ms Doecke said, adding the tiny baby still wasn’t strong enough to breathe on her own.

With mum, dad and bub seven hours away in Melbourne, the family’s five other children stayed at home in Mildura, relying on the generous support of family friends and relatives to take care of them.

“They’re doing OK, the girls are very worried about Pixie because she is such a new baby but my sister says they’re are doing OK,” Ms Doecke said.

Ms Doecke, on the other hand, is taking the situation day by day.

“I’m doing OK, it comes in waves and just depends on the day,” she said.

“Yesterday was really hard, but today I’m doing better.”

Pixie isn’t yet out of the woods as doctors prepare her for a heart bypass later this week.

To help with financial burden of medical treatment and travel between Mildura and Melbourne, family friend Amy Johnston has set up a GoFundMe campaign.

Already, $2700 has been raised to support the family.
