A legend in the state’s most northern town of Merbein is facing his toughest battle, and the entire community is coming together to ensure his family doesn’t stand alone.

Scott Pollock, a father of three who helped save the Merbein Football Club through fundraising efforts, has become the face of a new campaign as the community rallies around his family in his dying days.

Mr Pollock’s cancer moved aggressively in recent weeks. Originally starting in his kidneys, he had bounced back somewhat before a trip to Melbourne for treatment and family time at the Melbourne Show..

“He went there for immunotherapy and to take the family to the Melbourne Show, and then next thing I knew, his wife Nicole called me and said they have stopped all treatment and had given him only two days,” close family friend Josh Lee said.

Despite being in the last throes of the disease, Mr Pollock never complained and always put his friends and family first.

“He never complained once about the pain or anything. He was a tough bastard,” Mr Lee told us.

A family man, who loved his wife and his three boys more than anything, his good mate knew he had to do something to support them.

Mr Lee started a GoFundMe to help look after his good mate’s family after Mr Pollock passes.

The fundraiser reached an astounding $17600 at the time of writing in just three days.

It was the least Mr Lee could do for his old mate.

“We played footy together for Merbein when we were younger, but we got really close when our boys started kinder when they were three,” Mr Lee said.

From there, a decades-long friendship between the two families blossomed, with Mr Lee saying Mr Pollock was one of the best blokes he had ever known.

“He was a bit of an Alby Mangels type. Loved fishing, loved camping, loved shooting,” Mr Lee said.

Visiting ‘Scotty P,’ as he’s affectionately known, in the hospital was one of the hardest things Mr Lee ever had to do.

“He was feeling so crook and that sort of stuff, but he was the one encouraging us to hold it together. He was just so selfless,” Mr Lee said.

Mr Lee described Mr Pollock as an outdoorsman who was tough as nails.

“When he rang me to tell me he wasn’t going to make it, I said, ‘How the hell am I ever going to put another fish I caught on Facebook? Because I hardly caught any; it was always him, and I’d just stand there holding it for a picture,” Mr Lee said.

That story speaks to Mr Pollock’s nature as a selfless man, who was always looking to do right by others.

“He’d rock up to the lawn bowls club here in Merbein with a bunch of fish, scaled and gutted, and just give it to them and say, ‘Here’s dinner,’” Mr Lee said.

“He’d do random things like that for just about everyone. He had a heart of gold. He was just an all around nice guy who was always there for you if you needed it,” Mr Lee said

Whether it was the Merbein Lawn Bowls Club, Merbein Football Club, or the Merbein Cobras Basketball Club where Mr Pollock coached, his selflessness will be missed. But he’ll always be remembered by those who knew him as a legend of Merbein.
