A man from Melbourne’s western suburbs is accused of barricading himself with a group of people, including a child, at a Mildura high school, a court has heard.

Reggie Naden, 26, fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court applying for bail after being arrested following a terrifying incident at Chaffey Secondary College on Deakin Ave in Mildura on Monday.

The court heard Mr Naden allegedly approached the front counter at the high school in what was described as a clearly drug affected state.

Police said after a parent entered the building, Mr Naden began yelling and screaming before he allegedly jumped the front counter, pushing people out of the way and making a beeline for the first aid room.

It was alleged Mr Naden barricaded himself in the first aid room with three other alleged victims, including one victim that was just 13-years-old.

When police arrived, Mr Naden was still barricaded in the room and was reportedly screaming that people outside had weapons and were trying to kill him.

Police needed to force entry into the first aid room and used a taser to arrest him.

Police prosecutor Matt Pardon argued strongly against Mr Naden getting bail, saying Mr Naden would likely continue to feed his drug habit, and that his drug-induced psychosis was a danger to the public.

Mr Naden’s lawyer, Manny Nicolosi, suggested the Melbourne man could live with his sister in Mildura, highlighting his Indigenous background and struggles with methamphetamine.

The court heard Mr Naden arrived in Mildura two weeks ago and almost immediately allegedly purchased methamphetamine.

“This is an unfortunate and ugly incident, but clearly drug use has been a problem for this person,” Mr Nicolosi said.

Magistrate Patrick Southey denied Mr Naden’s bail application, citing risks to public safety.

“I’m sorry. I’m not going to grant you bail. The risk is just unacceptable. The most recent incident here in Mildura is truly frightening. You’re clearly in the grip of a big methamphetamine problem,” Mr Southey said.

Mr Naden is scheduled to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 23.
