Kaylen Pappin: Gang of thugs sentenced over machete assault

A known member of a Mildura gang stomped on a teen’s head during a brutal bashing involving baseball bats, and a machete, a court has heard.

Mildura man Kaylen Pappin, 19, pleaded guilty to charges of carjacking, aggravated burglary, assault and possession of a controlled weapon.

Pappin and three others chased down and attacked an 18-year-old victim who was riding his scooter on August 12 2021.

The teen tried to hide in the front yard of a nearby house but Pappin and his accomplices, who had been chasing him in a black SUV, got out of their car armed with knives and baseball bats and beat him.

An accomplice started hitting the victim with a bat before Pappin pushed him to his knees and threatened him with a 50cm machete knife before all four bashed the victim with their weapons.

The assault was captured on CCTV and showed Pappin stomping on the victim’s head multiple times as he lay on the ground.

The brutal assault lasted 20 seconds, after the group left in the SUV.

Police arrived shortly after, but the victim refused to provide a statement to police due to “extreme” fear of retribution.

Pappin and one of his accomplices were arrested the next day.

Pappin was already on parole for aggravated carjacking, where he slashed a victim’s face with a box cutter, and made no application for bail.

On Thursday he was sentenced Pappin to a total of four months in youth detention, having assessed him as highly vulnerable in adult custody.
