A father and son allegedly attacked a man at their Mildura share house following a drunken dispute, a court has heard.

Joginder Vanaik, 65, and Davinder Vanaik, 39, who now call Cranbourne West home, are both facing charges including aggravated home invasion, assault with a weapon and theft.

The pair both pleaded not guilty at a committal hearing at Mildura Magistrates’ Court, with the case now headed to the County Court for a directions hearing.

The court heard that on April 6, 2023, Joginder, his son Davinder, and a group of men allegedly let themselves into the alleged victim’s bedroom.

It’s alleged that Joginder had a kitchen knife in his hand, while it was claimed the other men, including Joginder’s son Davinder, entered the room brandishing metal poles

It was alleged that Joginder assaulted the victim, punching him several times in the face while Davinder is claimed to have been hitting him with a metal pole.

The assault allegedly only stopped when one of the other inhabitants of the house said they were going to call the police.

The alleged victim also claimed that the father-son duo stole his phone, which had his licence and $700 cash in it, and slashed one of the tires of his Toyota Tarago.

The alleged victim told police he had sustained a fractured eye socket and bruising as a result of the attack.

Joginder and Davinder Vanaik both remain on bail on strict conditions, including having to surrender their passports.

The duo will front Melbourne County Court on July 11.
