GoFundMe launched for Kobe Gilchrist after horror car crash

The “best day” turned into a tragedy for a Mildura boy. Now he’s trying to pick up the pieces.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

The “best day” turned into the worst for Mildura boy Kobe Gilchrist last week.

The 10-year-old spent Saturday at the Mildura Show with his mum Rebecca before a long drive back to Adelaide.

It was the first time he’d connected with Rebecca in a long time, as she got her life back on track after suffering from drug addictions.

They hadn’t long left the northern Victorian town, bound for the South Australian capital when aunt Megan Gilchrist got a tragic phone call.

A truck had clipped their car just outside of Berri, leaving Kobe injured and Rebecca dead.

“He facetimed me and at first I thought he was laughing, it wasn’t until later I realised he something was wrong and he was screaming,” she said.

Sending triple-0 to the scene, Megan asked Kobe to check his mum’s pulse.

“I asked him to put his hand on her neck and see if see could feel anything but he just kept screaming ‘I think my mum’s dead’,” she said.

“Rebecca did what any parent would do, swerved, took the brunt and paid with her life to save his.”

At the hospital, the realisation of having truly lost his mum set in.

“Kobe told me at the hospital ‘I’ll never have mum’s gravy and mash potato again’,” Megan said.

With Kobe now in Adelaide with his dad, Megan has created a GoFundMe to support him.
