A once promising footballer from the Sunraysia League in Mildura has admitted he needs to “get his s--- together” following a string of offending fuelled by a raging meth addiction.
Jessy Brown, 19, pleaded guilty in Mildura Magistrates Court after breaching a community corrections order (CCO) and committing several new driving offences.
The driving related offences included, driving while disqualified, theft of a motor vehicle, driving an unregistered vehicle, and recklessly endangering an emergency worker.
The CCO breach was related to previous offending Brown had been involved with.
He was sentenced to six months in jail and received a six-month driving ban.
Brown’s old CCO was revoked, and he will be placed on a new CCO upon his release.
Supported in court by several family members, Brown had a frank discussion with Magistrate Rose Falla prior to his sentencing.
Ms Falla asked Brown how long it had been since he last played football, to which he replied it had been three or four years.
The Magistrate then inquired why he had stopped playing the sport he loves.
“I started getting involved with drugs … I probably should have kept playing footy,” Brown admitted.
“Now that I am sober, I realise how important my family is,” he continued.
“I need to get my s--- together.”
Ms Falla agreed, adding, “It’s time to start making better decisions for yourself. You have a bright future if you let yourself have it.”
With time already served, Brown is expected to be released in early August.
