Father fights off alleged serial carjacker in Mildura while children watched

The mother of two children who watched their dad allegedly fight off a carjacker at a Mildura supermarket carpark say they are now struggling to sleep.

Two children are “in shock” after they watched their father fight off an alleged serial carjacker in Mildura while they were in the backseat.

Police and ambulance were called to the Coles carpark on Fifteenth Street about 7.45pm on Monday.

It’s alleged the 38-year-old man attempted to steal a car with two adults and two children inside while the father attempted to fight the man off.

The children’s mother said her kids were “in shock” after the incident.

“The kids were in shock and didn’t sleep well last night,” she said.

A man has since been chagred following a series of alleged carjacking incidents in Mildura.

A Mildura man, 38, has been charged with numerous offences including two counts of attempted carjacking, one count of carjacking and driving offences. He has been remanded to appear in Mildura Magistrates’ Court on June 15.

It’s alleged after the incident at Coles the man then carjacked a Toyota Prado, pulling a female victim from the driver’s seat and fleeing the scene in the stolen car.

The Prado side-swiped a vehicle on Eleventh Street, with both vehicles sustaining extensive damage.

Abandoning the damaged Prado, the man allegedly tried to steal another vehicle at the intersection of Deakin Avenue and Ninth Street however a security guard witnessed the incident and conducted a citizen’s arrest until police arrived.

The Mildura man was taken to hospital for assessment, where he remains under police guard.

The security guard and victims of the carjacking incidents sustained minor injuries.

It is believed a man attempted to hijack the car while the family, including children, were inside before they went inside the supermarket to do their shopping.
