Daryl Frances Robinson: Mildura police cell smeared with faeces

A man who has faced court over a day of disgusting antics has brought further attention to himself for his bizarre actions in front of a magistrate.

Being taken to the police cells at Mildura wasn’t the end of a Colignan man’s offending.
Being taken to the police cells at Mildura wasn’t the end of a Colignan man’s offending.

After a wild night that prompted several calls to police, a man wiped his faeces along the wall of a cell, a court has heard.

Colignan man Daryl Frances Robinson, 57, on Friday appeared at Mildura Magistrates’ Court.

Robinson pleaded guilty to charges including resisting an emergency worker on duty, behaving in an indecent manner near a public place and acting in a way prejudicial to the good order of the police gaol.

As he was being brought into the dock by custody officers, Robinson entered into a fighting stance with clenched fists while looking in the direction of the police prosecutor.

His entrance interrupted a sentencing Magistrate Michael Coghlan was delivering on a previous matter.

“Behave,” Mr Coghlan told Robinson.

Police told the court multiple triple-0 calls about Robinson’s behaviour in Mildura and Irymple were received between 2pm and 9.30pm on Wednesday.

Officers spoke to Robinson throughout the afternoon and evening, including directing him to move on from an Irymple address.

Robinson later attended the Irymple Hotel, where he climbed the wall of an outdoor area and was swinging on a pole.

Officers attended the pub.

After the prosecutor reading a summary said it appeared as though Robinson intended to climb the building’s roof, Robinson asked from the dock whether the officers could read his mind.

“A load of s***,” Robinson said in court.

Police said Robinson became abusive and was asked to leave the pub, though he initially made no effort to do so.

After being given a direction to move on, Robinson was said to have crossed the street and exposed his buttocks to patrons of the pub and police officers.

Robinson was arrested about 9.30pm after he was found in a prohibited location.

He was said to have resisted arrest and refused to get in the back of the police van.

The prosecutor told the court that Robinson defecated in the police cells and spread his faeces across the cell walls.

“I did not,” Robinson protested from the dock. “It was only one wall.”

Robinson’s lawyer said he was clearly substance-affected at the time of the offending.

On behaving in an indecent manner near a public place, Robinson said: “I pulled my pants down, I was just being a smart-a***, I’m sorry.”

Mr Coghlan said while Robinson had dementia, the matter was serious.

Mr Coghlan said it was also the sixth time he’d dealt with Robinson in the previous eight months.

Robinson was sentenced to 10 days in prison.

He ripped off his mask and yelled as he was taken back into custody.
