A Mildura man caught grooming and sending explicit images of himself to two children and supplying them with cannabis has denied knowing their age, a court has heard.

Daniel Currah, 31, pleaded guilty in the Circuit County Court in Mildura on November 9 to multiple charges including grooming a child under 16, communicating with a child under 16 including indecent material and supplying a drug of dependence to a person under 16.

The court heard Currah made contact with the two victims between December 19, 2022 and January 18, 2023 while being a registered sex offender.

One of Currah’s court ordered obligations was that he report any contact with a child under 18 to police within 24 hours of the interaction.

He contacted both victims more than 100 times via phone calls and text messages, including intimate and indecent messages where he asked both victims to sexually engage with him.

Messages included Currah asking one victim to show him their genitalia, “would you have any naughty pictures” and also sent one image of his penis.

Currah was arrested on January 18 over the offending, telling police he believed his reporting obligation was within seven days of contact.

He denied knowing the ages of the two victims and said the communication between them were his own “personal f-----g conversations”.

He made admissions to supplying cannabis to both victims, saying “at least they’re not sitting there smoking crack and getting f----d up”.

The court heard Currah had been a registered sex offender since 2012, when he pleaded guilty in the Mildura Magistrates’ Court to five charges of sexual penetration of a child under 15.

The court heard Currah had also been sentenced earlier this year to 37 days in custody for stalking a 15-year-old.

The court heard Currah suffered from an intellectual disability, a possible acquired brain injury and other mental illnesses that had yet to be properly diagnosed.

Judge David Sexton said he was “concerned about the lack of information” given to the court about Currah’s previous healthcare.

“I have many questions, most of which cannot be answered on the basis of the information I have,” he said.

“I need to know what this man’s functioning (level) is.”

Currah has spent 259 days in custody and will return to the County Court Circuit in Mildura on November 15.
