A 36-year-old Mildura man told the court he was going to kill himself after he was denied bail on alleged kidnapping and stalking charges.
Christopher Camin lost it when Magistrate Michael Coghlan denied him bail on Wednesday, saying, “I’ll kill myself in jail because of this.”
The court heard Mr Camin allegedly lured his alleged victim to a secluded location by pretending to be a friend before emerging from some nearby grapevines and throwing them in his car on April 15.
After allegedly taking the alleged victim’s phone, Mr Camin drove around erratically for an hour and a half, berating the victim verbally, before returning them home,
The alleged victim reported the incident to police, telling officers they were in fear for their life.
Upon hearing this in court, Mr Camin said, “I don’t care about the victim,” and also said, “I’d rather be dead than be accused of this type of stuff.”
Police found the vehicle used in the alleged kidnapping and told the court that after processing it was determined the vehicle had scratches consistent with being driven through a grapevine.
They also told the court they found shoe prints on the windows, believed to be from the alleged victim attempting to kick the windows out and try to escape.
Police located Mr Camin some eight days after the incident, allegedly hiding under a bed at an address in Mildura.
Mr Coghlan said Mr Camin had not satisfied him of the exceptional circumstances required to grant him bail.
Mr Camin will next appear in court on June 17 for a committal mention.
