A homeless Mildura man has been accused of breaking into a house and attempting to sexually assault a 17-year-old while holding a knife, allegedly telling her, “I’m going to f--- you b----.”
Chad Wells, 30, fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court on several charges including aggravated burglary, possessing child abuse material, and threat to commit a sexual offence.
The court heard that on July 31, between 10pm and midnight, Mr Wells allegedly broke into a house.
Police say the alleged victim was woken by a noise and when she opened her eyes Mr Wells was allegedly lying on top of her holding a knife.
It was alleged Mr Wells said to the complainant, “You know what you did to my friend”.
The accused told police in a statement that Mr Wells said to her, “I’m here to f--k you b---h,” as he held a large knife toward her.
The court heard the alleged victim tried to run away, but was pulled back by her ponytail. Mr Wells then allegedly held a knife to her throat, drawing blood.
It was also alleged Mr Wells grabbed her by the hair when she tried to escape.
The alleged victim begged Mr Wells to leave, and when he finally did she immediately called triple-0.
Mr Wells was arrested by police on Thursday and he denied he attacked the alleged victim, saying he was at his girlfriend’s house until 8pm and then wandered around Mildura for the rest of the night.
When he was asked about the attempted sexual assault, Mr Wells denied he would ever do such a thing.
“She’s not someone of the stature I would sexually harass. I have standards. I can’t do anything about her fantasies,” it is alleged Mr Wells said to police.
Police also alleged Mr Wells had child abuse material on his phone when he was arrested.
Mr Wells displayed erratic behaviour throughout proceedings, banging his head on the table and interrupting both the police prosecutor and the magistrate.
The accused’s lawyer Hugh Middleton initially stated Mr Wells wouldn’t be applying for bail, which prompted an extraordinary outburst by the accused.
“You’re meant to be applying for bail. Why is everyone lying to me? I’ve done nothing wrong, there’s no evidence,” Mr Wells screamed
“If I am remanded in custody until this is over, I won’t come out alive,” Mr Wells told the court.
“I’m not a threat, I’m a coward. I avoid conflict. All I want to do is go home and cuddle up with my girlfriend and cry my eyes out.”
Following Mr Wells outburst and hearing him out as he represented himself, Magistrate Michael Coghlan ultimately denied bail.
“The prosecution case is a pretty strong one,” Mr Coghlan said.
Mr Wells is next slated to appear in court on October 23.
