A Mildura man has been accused in court of assaulting a police officer in an attempt to evade police.
Anthony Mete appeared by AV Link from custody where he is serving a three month sentence for several breaches of an intervention order.
Thursday’s hearing saw Mr Mete attempt to get bail as he appeals that sentence.
Other matters before the court swiftly became a talking point as the court heard of an alleged burglary and theft of a vehicle on January 5 of this year.
The court heard Mr Mete was accused of stealing a vehicle from a property after he allegedly smashed a window to enter the property and steal the car keys.
Police arrested him on those matters on January 19, and it was claimed Mr Mete threw his body forward when officers attempted to arrest him and a struggle ensued.
Police officers needed to call back up to complete the arrest of Mr Mete on the corner of Ontario Ave and Sterling Dr, near Fifteenth St in Mildura.
One officer sustained injures to his thumb ligaments from the struggle and multiple officers attended the Mildura Base Hospital.
Mr Mete was seen shaking his head and placing his head in his hands as his hearing came to a close, yelling out “I love you,” to his partner who appeared in support of him before the link cut off.
Mr Mete was refused bail on the intervention order matters and is due to appear before court on car theft, and burglary as well as assaulting and evading police on April 17.
