A Mildura man accused of strangling his former partner until she lost consciousness sobbed as he was denied bail.

The 24-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared via video link in the Mildura Magistrates Court facing 13 family violence related charges.

Police allege earlier this year he and his former partner were at a Mildura pub when he became jealous of another man.

His alleged victim left the pub with friends and went to a nearby address.

But her alleged abuser followed a short time later and was told to leave by the victim’s friends.

He returned home, contacted a friend of his alleged victim who he told he was in trouble and in hospital.

His alleged victim walked to his home when she realised she had been lying about being in hospital and the pair started arguing.

He allegedly dragged his victim into his bedroom and strangled her until she lost consciousness before he removed her clothes and took her phone.

He then allegedly refused to return the phone and started hitting his victim again when she asked for it back.

The alleged victim then fled and ran to the Mildura police station, where she was taken to Mildura Base Hospital for observation.

Police arrested him at his home later that night.

When interviewed, he said his partner got angry at him at the pub and hit him several times before he walked home and drank rum until he fell asleep.

He was also charged over events in March 2021 when his alleged victim did not initially report due to fear.

In one alleged incident, he pinned his partner to his bed and yelled abuse at her before covering her mouth and nose, stopping her from breathing.

In another alleged incident, he assaulted his victim as they walked home from a house party.
The sound was so loud people nearby woke and tried to intervene.

He allegedly attacked assaulted one resident before another tackled him.

During his court hearing, he broke down in tears when magistrate Michael Coghlan did not grant his bail.

The case was adjourned until September.
