A drunk on the run for more than a decade after he kicked his way out of a police vehicle during a wild night in Mildura has been sentenced in court.
Mildura’s Alifeleti Ahomana pleaded guilty to being drunk in a public place in Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
A police prosecutor said Ahomana was caught urinating on a Langtree Ave shopfront on May 13, 2006 when he resisted arrest.
The court was told a member of the public helped the officer restrain him and a number of officers helped get him locked him up in a police vehicle.
But the court heard Ahomana kicked the door of the police pod open and ran from the scene.
Authorities believed he made a dash over the border into NSW.
Ahomana handed himself in after returning to live in Victoria in 2019, making admissions in an interview at Mildura police station.
According to the police summary read in court, an officer sustained a torn shoulder muscle as a result of Ahomana kicking the door, but those assault related charges were withdrawn.
Ahomana’s lawyer said no photographs or medical report had been provided about any injury.
Ahomana was fined $1200 with conviction.
