St Kilda City’s Mitchell Oman sentenced in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court after drugs, cash found in Bentleigh East raid

The court heard Oman used to be involved with the St Kilda City Football Club and won two premierships as captain.

A popular former St Kilda football player has been urged to avoid the drug game and live a normal life after he was caught up in a police raid.

Mitchell Oman pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court to drug possession and possessing cash suspected to be the proceeds of crime following a police search at a Bentleigh East property.

On January 19 2023, police executed a search warrant at Oman’s girlfriend’s house where they located a small amount of ecstasy and $10,500 cash under a bedside table.

The 26-year-old social media manager was further charged after he failed to give police his phone passcode to assist with their investigation.

His lawyer told Magistrate Malcolm Thomas he had great career prospects with potential to work around the world and had been involved with St Kilda City Football Club, having led the club to two premierships as captain in the Southern Football Netball League.

She told the court he made about $2200 a week and also worked part-time for his father’s consultancy firm.

The court heard his co-accused — who was sentenced last week — pleaded guilty to trafficking offences while Oman was only charged with possession.

Mr Thomas said the offending “smelt” like trafficking to him but said he was there to sentence him for a possession offence.

Mr Thomas delivered an impassioned plea to Oman and said if he was more heavily involved in the drug scene then he should count himself lucky he avoided a more serious charge.

“If you are tempted to go back, ultimately you will get caught and end up in custody,” Magistrate Thomas said.

Oman was fined $4000.

No conviction was recorded.
