Food delivery cyclist spotted in Burnley Tunnel

A food delivery cyclist has been captured on video illegally riding through the Burnley Tunnel.

Collingwood ruckman Mason Cox shared the vision on his Instagram stories last night, writing: “Uber Eats takes on the Burnley Tunnel – better get five stars.”

Operator Transurban confirmed the incident took place at 7.42pm Sunday, when a cyclist entered the Tunnel via Power St.

Transurban monitors the road 24/7 with hundreds of cameras and automatic incident detection on the road.

When it saw the cyclist enter it reduced the speed in the Tunnel to 40km/h, closed the left lane, and dispatched an incident response crew to safely escort the rider out through the Tunnel.

Transurban said it would continue to engage with the food delivery industry to help prevent these incidents from happening.

“Cycling on a freeway or in tunnels is not just against the law, it’s also incredibly dangerous,” a Transurban spokeswoman said.

“These people are putting their own lives at risk and risking the safety of others.

“Incidents like this can also cause frustrating delays for drivers as our crews need to close lanes and drop the speed limit to keep everyone safe.”
