Christmas Melbourne: Santa visits in Fed Square, Hosier Lane festive street art

It’s Christmas time in the city and Melbourne is ready to put on a show to bring Victorians back to the CBD. See what’s on in the city.

Melbourne City Council has unveiled spectacular plans for a jolly Christmas to entice visitors back to the CBD.

The festivities will start on November 27 with the launch of Shop the City in partnership with Melbourne Fashion Week.

Santa’s House will be moving to Federation Square, complete with 16m Christmas tree and COVID-safe visits with Santa.

The month-long festivities will also include a Christmas-themed picnic area,Piazza de Natale,in Argyle Square on Lygon St, Carlton.

And Hosier Lane and locations across Carlton, North Melbourne and Kensington will be decorated with festive street art as part of a collaboration with Blender Studios.

Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp said the festive boost was essential in keeping local businesses alive.

“Christmas is not cancelled in 2020,” she said.

“We are looking forward to welcoming Melburnians back into city safely for our annual Shop the City event, which will mark the beginning of the 2020 Melbourne Christmas Festival.

“The Christmas trading season is the most important time of year for city retailers, the 2019 Christmas Festival generated more than $64 million to the city economy.

“Providing a boost to local businesses has never been more important to keep Melburnians in jobs.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Christmas projections will be displayed across the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne Town Hall and Princes Bridge.

Santa’s House will be moving to Federation Square

Christmas themed picnic area Piazza de Natale will be erected in Argyle Square on Lygon Street, Carlton.

Deck the Street will see Hosier Lane and locations across Carlton, North Melbourne and Kensington decorated with festive street art as part o f a collaboration with Blender Studios.

Santa’s Spectacles – an augmented reality experience

Returning to the Melbourne Christmas festival is Christmas Square at Fed Square, the Christmas Collective and the Christmas Quest.
