The man accused of killing an elderly Fitzroy man as he crossed Johnston St earlier this month “accidentally” accelerated through a red light, a court has heard.

A 69-year-old South Yarra man has been charged over a fatal collision on the border of Abbotsford and Collingwood earlier this month.

Police allege a grey Toyota sedan hit the man on about 9am on Sunday, April 10 on the corner Johnstone and Hoddle streets.

The man, 74 and from Fitzroy, sadly died at the scene.

Mr Page stopped at the scene and is helping police with their inquiries.

CCTV shows the man crossing Johnston St before being hit approximately halfway across the road.

Lauren Cassimatis, for Mr Page, told the court that Mr Page “accidentally hit the accelerator” through a red light.

Ms Cassimatis sought to have Mr Page’s bail conditions amended to allow him to drive, but Magistrate Guillaume Bailin did not grant this concession.

Michael, who lives metres from the scene of the crash, said at the time that it was “really, really dangerous intersection.”

“There’s been issues with motorcyclists and cyclists coming off their bikes for a while,” Michael, who did not want to share his surname, said.
