Yarraville Seddon is finally on the board in 2023.

Tipped to be one of the biggest improvers in the Western Region league this season, the Eagles have been slow out of the starting blocks having lost their opening five games of the year.

Now coach Brad Julier is hoping a 12.9 (81) to 11.9 (75) victory over Point Cook Centrals is exactly what his side needs to kick start its season.

Julier has had limited opportunity to pick his best side this season with the Eagles averaging several changes a week due to an opening month ravaged by injury.

“It’s a bit of a relief,” he said of Saturday’s win.

“Injuries have been a big factor but they aren’t an excuse. Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been starting to get some guys back from injury. I think we’ve used 37 or 38 guys already this year and six or seven of those are under-18s.

“We put together a consistent four quarter effort on Saturday, it wasn’t our best but it was the best game we’ve put together this year.

“We haven’t been blown away, we’d just have patches where we would let ourselves down.”

Among those to standout in the one-goal victory was Lachie Green who led all comers with four goals.

Normally the Eagles’ fullback, Green has been thrown forward in recent games due to the club’s injury issues.

“We lost all of our forwards a few weeks ago and he’s gone forward and done a job for us,” Julier said.

“I thought Michael Selsby was very good as well, Josh Helliwell continued to play some good footy as well.

“Darcy Grieves across half back gave us some real drive.”

Ruckman Akol Deng has also made a strong start to the season, consistently appearing in the best for the Eagles.

Julier said a pre-season with Werribee’s VFL team had set Deng on the right path.

“His development is going north at a rapid rate,” he said.

For Point Cook Centrals, Daniel Strnak was named best afield after a three goal performance.

Yarraville Seddon will make two wins in a row against Hoppers Crossing while the Sharks travel to take on Altona.
