Wyndhamvale records strong win over North Footscray

Wyndhamvale got its season off to the perfect start against North Footscray as recruits impressed with one element of the game standing out to one of its coaches.

Wyndhamvale has established its brand for the 2023 season.

And it’s the type of attitude the Falcons must bring according to new co-coach Rob May.

The Falcons opened their Western Region league Division 2 season with a 8.9 (57) to 4.8 (32) victory over North Footscray to get the tenures of May and Jason Parker off to the perfect start.

In a game which failed to really come to life after quarter-time, with the sides kicking just another five goals between them, May credited his side’s pressure for getting them the four points.

New recruit Beau Bostock was the leader in that department with his relentless attack on the opposition ball carrier.

“Our tackling was second to none, as good as it has been through pre-season until now,” he said.

“It earned us a couple of free kicks at crucial times and we managed to make the most of those opportunities, especially early.

“The pressure was there all day. It had to be with the conditions we were faced with.”

The Falcons raced out of the blocks kicking six goals to one in the opening term and appeared to be well in control for the remainder of the game despite struggling to hit the scoreboard.

Co-captain Jack Tessari made the most of his opportunities with three goals while Mathiang Kak booted three of his own.

Among the Falcons best were ruckman Alex Mackinnon, Gunjwok Nyawela and Bostock who were making their senior debuts for the club.

Alex Hamilton, Brodhi Green and Connor Yeoell were also impressive.

“We got a good start then the weather played its part,” May said.

“The same happened in the reserves game, it was quite slippery out on the ground. We had a good contribution right across the ground.

“Alex in the ruck missed last year and gave us first use. There were lots of positives especially when we consider we had a few new guys playing their first game.”

Wyndhamvale will now turn its attention to a clash with Sunshine, who enjoyed a week off after their Good Friday victory over Sunshine.

In the weekend’s other game, Parkside outclassed competition newcomers Braybrook by 133 points.

Four different players kicked three goals with Nathan Montague named best on ground.
